Flag Day was celebrated this week, and there is one location near a King County Parks facility where you can see flags flown from every state in the country. As part of the 1990 Goodwill Games and to enhance the image of the newly-incorporated City of Federal Way (February 28. 1990) as “Flag City, U.S.A.”, the 50 state flags were placed along the arterial adjacent to the then newly-constructed Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in the City of Federal Way’s right-of-way. Federal Way has maintained the flags and flagpoles ever since. Of note is that the Aquatic Center occasionally gets calls about the Mississippi State flag, which is the only U.S. state flag to still include the Confederate battle flag’s saltire on a portion of the flag. We want residents to know that we proudly serve all who live in King County and work to make sure our facilities are a welcome place for all.
