Holiday grease disposal

Posted by

Whether you’re roasting a Charles Dickens style goose or a tofurky, keep the holiday grease out of the drain.

We know we sound like Scrooges—but the buildup of fats, oils and grease is a major problem for home plumbing as well as our regional sewer system.

Here’s a video for holiday stormwater pollution prevention inspiration:

Environmental fats, oils and grease disposal tips

The Wastewater Treatment Blog offers environmentally friendly tips to keep the plumber off your party guest list while helping us keep our sewers fat-free all year long.

  • Use screens to keep hair, fruit stickers and other stuff out of drains and pipes.
  • Scrape out greasy bowls, pots, and pans before washing.
  • Keep fatty foods and meats out of the garbage disposal, and put cooled, solidified grease in the trash.

Final reminder

When grease is washed down the drain, it sticks to the inside of sewer pipes (both on your property and in the streets). Over time, it builds up and can block an entire pipe.

A sewer repair project in Bellevue turned up a baby ‘fatberg’ recently. Look at the size of that thing!
